The goals of software measurement

Software measurement helps to improve the understanding of a software. It provides the necessary information for the assessment and management of a software project. As the assessment plays an extremely important role in the software development process the goals of software measurement are formulated as follows:
  • Assessment: as evaluation of a given situation in a special environment
    • comprehension of the used methods
    • recognition of the characteristics of the development components
    • identification of development problems

  • Indication: as determination of certain factors or indicators for special characteristics
    • performance evaluation
    • lines of code analysis
    • reviews and milestones

  • CMM level 5: as model for the integration of software measurement in the process improvement
    • measurement-based method comparison
    • controlled software development
    • optimization of software production
